         Arteriosclerose é um termo geral que designa as diversas formas de endurecimento das artérias. Reflete o espessamento da parede arterial associado a perda de elasticidade da mesma. Ela se manifesta, sobretudo por um espessamento da camada íntima (I), em relação às camadas média (M) e adventícia (A). 

     Esse espessamento se dá em resposta a lesões vasculares, em que ocorre estímulo à migração e proliferação de células musculares lisas para essa camada, as quais, por sua vez, não possuem a mesma elasticidades que as células semelhantes da camada média e sintetizam matriz extra-celular, levando ao enrijecimento da artéria  e oclusão da luz do vaso. Na imagem, o espessamento se manifesta por todo o vaso, conforme indicado pelas setas.

Translation:  Arteriosclerosis is a general term for various forms of hardening of the arteries. Reflects the arterial wall thickening associated with loss of elasticity of the artery. It is manifested mainly by a thickening of the intimal layer (I), in relation to the middle layer (M) and the adventitia (A).

      This thickening occurs in response to vascular injury, which occurs in stimulating the migration and proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the layer which, in turn, do not have the same elasticity similar cells of the media layer and synthesize extracellular matrix cell, leading to hardening of the artery and occlusion of the vessel lumen. As shown, the thickening is manifested throughout the vessel, as indicated by the arrows.
